The Party was cancelled, now what?

It’s an unfortunate fact that Covid-19 is getting in the way of many celebrations, including birthday parties! We’ve had many cancellations for some great kids that have had their parents asking, now what? How do we make this day feel special?

This is a tricky time for sure! We have all had to get creative to keep the kids busy and distracted from the limitations that we are all facing. This pressure definitely mounts when it’s your child’s birthday!

Here are some ideas that you might consider:

• Decorate your child’s bedroom door as though it was their locker. Covering it with birthday cards, streamers, bows, wrapping paper, etc.

• Fill their bedroom with balloons after they’ve gone to sleep, so they wake up to a nice surprise. No helium required, walking through balloons is fun at any age!

• Place a sign in the window/lawn to announce your child’s birthday, asking neighbors to honk as they pass by.

• Coordinate a zoom call with friends.

  • Kids will be happy to see each other

  • Younger kids will benefit from an organized game to play together, such as trivia or BINGO.

• Give friends and family a heads up on your child’s birthday, we could all use a little help remembering the date, and ask them to send video birthday messages.

• Serve a special breakfast:

  • You can serve their favorite or make it ‘fancy’ with a menu for them to choose from.

  • Better yet, have the Birthday child help make the breakfast. The gift of creating together is the best gift!

• Have a themed dinner:

  • A fancy dinner, with everyone dressing up in their Sunday best

  • PJ party, breakfast for dinner

• Pick up a Party with ME! craft kit to complete together

Although no one likes to have their special celebration cancelled, I hope that these activities add a bit of extra joy to your child’s birthday. If you have additional ideas, please add them to the comments!
